The Sound of Music

Human connection is necessary for the health and wellbeing of any individual. It is something that is easy for anyone around the world to understand. People are connected through cultural music or even just enjoying the same types of music no matter what language it’s in. This past year, when I was in the school musical “The Sound of Music” a lot of the music I sang was in Latin. When you would look in the audience, although they might not have understood the words, they could hear the beauty in the song. People can recognize the tone of music even if the words are foreign to them. Music is like a language all in itself. It has the ability to show emotions and unify all different kinds of people. If you go to an event that includes music, you won’t see just one type of person there. There will be people of different ages, gender and ethnicity. All these people will unite in one place to share a common interest. Music.
When I first started the musical, I was terrified because I didn’t know any of the people there. I had never been a part of anything like that before. At first it was slow, and I didn’t talk to people, but then I started to connect through my love of music. People would start to get to know me, just because of our common interest. I can now say that I have made some amazing friends through this experience. All this happened because I took the chance to pursue my passion. I learned to connect with others when before this; I had trouble talking to people that I had known for years. It helped me to find confidence and to pursue mutual interests with other people around me.
Human connections doesn’t necessarily have to be with another person either. It could be the way that we connect with the music itself. It can affect your emotions and become a large part in your life. When you’re stuck in a rut it’s so easy for music to become your way out. When you hear a song and the mood is gloomy, most of the time this can affect your own mood. Without even realizing, we can get upset just from hearing that sad song. For some people music has a much deeper meaning. It becomes like a crutch, that without it they would be lost. In this case music can affect our connections with other people in a negative way because you no longer need help from others. People don’t understand how much music connects us to others in our life till you think about a world without it.
